5 Conclusions - Section 5

1. It is most unfortunate that many citizens who use the footpaths have great difficulty in navigating and moving safely between any two points within the City. The examples photographed are mostly typical, occurring in the centre and the suburbs. In the case of works within the footway, the situations constantly changes so that safe routes which exist on one day can easily become unsafe the next.

2. The reasons for these unnecessary problems can only be attributed to those in authority neglecting to fulfil their statutory obligations to the public at large, as summarised above in Section 2 "Recommendation to avoid most current problems".

3. The Summary of suggested solutions identifies none revolutionary procedures and generally follow recognised or statutory practices. It is therefore hoped that, with the prospect of the City attracting many visitors in the near future, these serious shortcomings will be promptly remedied addressed and remedied.

4. The registered charity Newcastle Disability Forum with its established structure of the Access, Highways and Transport and Sensory Working Groups are only too willing to support prompt action and will offer advice on any of these pressing matters (see also Appendix 2).
