Information Communication Technology (ICT), or more simply the use of computers and technology, can be a lifeline to some disabled people by being an excellent source of communication/information and ultimately helping to improve independence. Unfortunately it is often difficult for some disabled people to access conventional training due to circumstances such as confidence or accessibility. NDF's Outreach Project recognises this and provides a free service which sends a qualified ICT teacher into the homes of disabled people to teach them computer skills (including some national standards if requested) of their own choice and at their own pace.
Examples of skills taught so far have included:
Basic navigation for beginners
Use of the Internet and Email
Online shopping
Word processing (for example: writing letters)
Printing and scanning
Digital photography (for example: transferring images from camera to computer)
How to use screen reading and magnification software (for visually impaired learners)
CLAIT qualification
and much, much more
The most effective way to learn is by using your own computer equipment while being taught and when practicing on your own. However, this is not essential as we have portable equipment which can be brought to your homes for you to use.
To become a project beneficiary you will be disabled, live in the Newcastle upon Tyne area and have a desire to learn ICT.
